Trauma Services at Stamford Hospital
Stamford Hospital is an active Level II Trauma Center designated by the State of Connecticut since 1993.
Mission Statement
The Trauma Center is dedicated to the prompt, effective and safe treatment of trauma victims, staffed by qualified professionals and equipped appropriately. Quality assurance and performance improvement monitoring is concurrent in this program to ensure quality care is being delivered to all patients.
Program Statement
As a Level II trauma center, Stamford Hospital is able to provide immediate medical care to a signficant number of injured patients at any time. Board certified physicians in emergency medicine, orthopedics, neurosurgery, vascular, oral and maxillofacial and plastic surgery are immediately available for care. Other board-certified specialists are available, within a short time, as required. Pre-hospital components and nursing staff members play a critical role in all aspects of trauma care. As a teaching hospital, surgical residents are intimately involved in the care of trauma patients.

Kevin M. Dwyer, MD Director, Trauma/Surgical Critical Care
- Responsible for leading the multidisciplinary activities of the trauma program
- Recommends trauma team privileges
- Cooperating with the nursing administration to support the nursing needs of trauma patients
- Develop and implement procedures, policies and protocols
- Coordinating performance improvement and peer review process
Dr. Dwyer has been in this position since September 2008. He is board certified in Surgery and has a Surgery Certificate of Critical Care. He is a fellow of the Trauma Fellowship Inova Fairfax Regional Trauma Center, Falls Church, Virginia and Trauma Critical Care Fellowship, R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, University of Maryland.

Trauma Program Manager
- Responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of the trauma program by way of clinical activities, education responsibilities, performance improvement, liaison to many disciplines of trauma, internal resource to staff and administrative tasks.

- Participate in the development of trauma care systems at the community, state and national levels
- Supervision of the Trauma Registry
- Coordinates the Trauma Performance Improvement Committee and Trauma Multidisciplinary Peer Review Committee meetings
- Attends a minimum of 16 hours of trauma related continuing education per year.
Carla Rennie is a masters-prepared nurse in Patient Care Services. She has been the Trauma Program Manager since 2001. She is a member of the American Trauma Society, Society of Trauma Nurses, Emergency Nurses Association, Sigma Theta Tau and Association of Clinical Research Professionals. She is a TNCC Course Director and Instructor. She is certified as a provider in ACLS, ATCN, ENPC and PALS. She is a member and co-chairperson of the Connecticut Hospital Association's Trauma Discussion Group.
